On Monday 25th April at 11 am a tree planting ceremony to commemorate the life of Dr Kathleen Lynn, will take place in the Town Park in Killala.

Kathleen Lynn, born in Mullafarry, near Killala in 1874, was Chief Medical Officer, in the Irish Citizen Army and second in command at City Hall during the 1916 Rising.

After the Rising she founded St. Ultan’s Hospital for Infants where she pioneered vaccination, hygiene, and Montessori teaching. She was also active in the nationalist movement, being elected as a T.D. for Dublin in 1923, though she did not take her seat.

Lynn continued to work as a doctor until she was 81 years old and always strove to improve the conditions of her fellow countrymen and women. She believed that “every child was an individual and must know himself, or herself, loved”.

Kathleen Lynn died in 1955 and was buried in Deansgrange Cemetery, Dublin with full military honours.
